Have you ever thought, “I wish I had some additional storage, right now?” The truth is it’s so easy to acquire and hoard stuff.

There are also many reasons that you may need to store your beloved belongings other than in your home.

You may be downsizing, moving between rentals with no overlap or you may have realised that the hand-me-down antiques from Nan just won’t suit the amazing modern apartment that you’ve been eyeing up.

Whatever the reason, there are some simple ways to find the perfect dwelling to keep your goodies safe until you need them again.

Bigger isn’t always better

Like most things in life, storage units come in a variety of sizes. But bigger isn’t always better. You need to find the right space to suit your needs. You can rent units from the size of a locker, all the way to a room that’s big enough to fit all of your furniture in. Make sure you plan ahead before you sign on the dotted line to ensure your space fits your purpose, and your budget. It could help to mark out a space in your living room and stack your belongs to make sure they fit. If you’re going large, you may also need to plan a walkway to make sure you can get around once everything is in place. But, one thing’s for certain, there is no point in paying for space that you’re not going to use.

Safety first

If you’re going to leave your goods for a while, you need to have the peace of mind that they will be safe while you’re not watching over them. When researching storage venues, check for CCTV, alarm systems, burly security guards and ensure the locks are trustworthy. If you do end up in a place where you need to provide your own lock, try to get one with a key instead of a combination. Also… size matters! You hear it all the time, but if the establishment is unlucky enough to have a break in, you want your unit to be the one the crooks sidestep!

What is everybody else saying?

Sometimes it’s hard to know who to listen to. You may be inundated with advice from friends, family and complete strangers but online reviews are also worth checking out and obviously with discretion. However, word of mouth is the best form of publicity. It may also help you steer clear of the bad ones, if there are recurring nightmare reviews.

Getting from A to B

If you are moving a lot of stuff, it may be worth checking if the storage company offers a moving service. You know what they say, leave it to the professionals. And, always make sure you have a checklist of everything that’s going, so you can keep track of it all.

Location, Location, Location

When looking for a storage unit, it should be close enough for you to pop in when you need to. However, don’t just choose the one closest to your house, just because it’s closest to your house. Make sure you do your research. Most big cities will have a selection of storage facilities within a small radius so you should be spoilt for choice. Remember the other pointers we have given!

Timing is everything

It’s a good idea to check the office hours in relation to the gate hours. Sometimes the website might show late gate hours, but actually the office only opens 9-5 Monday to Friday… Which means if you have a question or need help on a Saturday then you will be stuck! Also make sure that the gate access is convenient to you. Can you get to your goodies on evenings and weekends? There’s no point paying for a safe space if you can’t get in when you want to.

Little Nasties

The last thing you want to find when you pop in to pick up your rock climbing gear is that a little critter has made your old sofa it’s home. When looking for a storage unit make sure that it’s sealed tight and that there is nowhere for any insects or small animals to sneak in. Once they’re in, they can cause a lot of damage and some of your belongings will be irreplaceable. Best to have a look around the establishment when you go to sign any papers too. If the office is clean and tidy, you can hope that the whole establishment is to, that way little visitors won’t be looking for a sleepover.

Is it hot in here?

Your valuables could easily be damaged by dampness or humidity. Check if the storage company has climate control within the units, if you are going to be leaving them there for a long time.

There’s no such thing as a silly question

When it comes to the safe keeping of your belongings, make sure you do your research. Go to multiple units in real time so you can get a feel for them. Don’t be shy and ask as many questions as you like. The final place has to be right for you.

Money matters

Get multiple quotes so that you can compare and find the right unit to fit your budget. There are some great deals around, but be aware of any hidden costs. Make sure you read the small print before signing any documents!

We hope that these tips help you out in your search!

Yours sincerely,
